GBR Dive/Snorkel
Diving the Great Barrier Reef with Poseidon Cruises
This day trip departs from Port Douglas to visit three different dive sites during the day. Poseidon’s fast cat can access 45 different sites on 16 different reefs which means that the crew can pick and choose the best three sites for the day’s diving. These sites include the Agincourt Reefs on the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef. These long, narrow reefs are regularly flushed by clear oceanic water welling up from the Coral Sea Trench nearby, creating coral gardens with excellent visibility and fish life.

Diving NOTE
Diving and Snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef - Please note
Delegates to Sharks International will have the opportunity to snorkel and dive on the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef. We have selected three trip options with reputable operators who offer good trip itineraries and excellent value for money. These operators have also demonstrated commitment to sustainable use of the Great Barrier Reef in that they have gained Advanced Ecotourism Certification and are ranked as High Standard Operators by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. They also actively participate in research and monitoring programs.
IMPORTANT notes for SCUBA divers
- Australian diving regulations are strict. If you want to SCUBA dive on the Great Barrier Reef, you MUST PROVIDE PROOF OF CERTIFICATION – that means your original PADI, NAUI, FAUI, SSI, BSAC etc dive certification card. Make sure you bring it with you!
- US divers: if you are planning to bring your own regulators, remember that SCUBA cylinders in Australia do not have DIN fittings.
- Divers should not fly within 12 hours of diving, or if you’ve done multiple dives, within 18 hours of the last dive.

Post-Conference Tour
Post conference dive expedition with Mike Ball Dive Expeditions, Monday 14th June to Thursday 17th June 2010
Four days/three nights diving the Great Barrier Reef (nine dives) and snorkelling with dwarf minke whales
Overview
Visiting the Great Barrier Reef during the southern winter means that delegates will have the rare opportunity to swim with dwarf minke whales. This dive expedition will combine world class diving on the Great Barrier Reef with the world’s only tourism program that involves swimming with dwarf minke whale. Dwarf minke whales were only described as a distinct species in the 1980s and are a unique feature of winter diving on the Great Barrier Reef. The whales appear between May and July and are noted for their curiosity, often approaching within metres of divers and snorkelers. Some encounters last for hours. The expedition also visits Great Barrier Reef “must do” dive sites such as the famous Cod Hole and the Ribbon Reefs.
The expedition is being organised through Eye to Eye Marine Encounters and will be based on Mike Ball’s famous MV Spoilsport.
